Handyman invoice template
A handyman invoice should list each task done, whether it was billed flat rate or by the hour, any trip charge or minimum, materials with receipts, the total, and how the customer can pay today.
What goes on a handyman invoice
Handyman work is a string of small jobs, often five or six on one visit. Mounting a TV, swapping a faucet and patching drywall each take different time and skill, so most handymen mix flat prices for common tasks with an hourly rate for anything unpredictable. A one-hour minimum and a trip charge protect you on short calls.
This sample invoice is for a half-day visit in Phoenix, Arizona. It shows a trip charge, a first-hour minimum, extra hours, flat-rate tasks and materials bought on the way. The prices are example 2026 rates for a metro area. Your market and your experience will move them up or down.

How to bill as a handyman
Set a minimum and stick to it
A 20-minute job still costs you drive time, parking and setup. A one-hour or two-hour minimum makes small calls worth taking. Say it when you book the visit so nobody is surprised at the end.
Flat rate the jobs you do every week
TV mounting, faucet swaps, ceiling fan installs and door adjustments have predictable times once you've done a few dozen. Customers like a known price, and you earn more when you get faster. Keep hourly billing for repairs where you can't see the problem yet.
Charge for the supply run
If you stop at the hardware store for parts, bill the materials and a reasonable amount of shopping time. Keep the receipt photo with the job. A small markup on materials covers returns and the parts you keep stocked in the truck.
Write tasks in plain words
'Rehung bathroom door, planed bottom edge, replaced strike plate' reads better than 'door repair.' Specific lines answer questions before they're asked and make the invoice useful if the customer needs it for a landlord or insurer.
Get paid before you pull out of the driveway
Waiting a week for a small invoice is how handymen end up chasing dozens of $200 balances. Invoicefy lets you text the invoice link from your phone in one tap while you pack the truck, and on the Pro plan the customer can pay by card from that link.
Questions people ask
Many handymen set a minimum equal to one or two hours of labor, plus a trip charge in some areas. As an example, a $95 first hour with $75 per hour after is common in larger metros. Rural rates are often lower.
Rules differ by state and sometimes by city. Many states let unlicensed handymen do small jobs under a dollar limit and exclude electrical, plumbing or structural work. Check your state contractor board before taking bigger jobs.
Use both. Price routine tasks by the job and unknown repairs by the hour with an estimate range. If an hourly job runs long, call the customer before you pass the range.
In some states repair labor is taxable, in others only the materials are, and some tax neither. It varies by state, so check with your state tax agency and show any tax as its own line.
Note it on the invoice, like 'customer-supplied faucet.' Many handymen charge the same labor but won't warranty parts they didn't buy. Saying so on the invoice avoids callbacks over a faulty fixture.
